Hvar

St. Stephen’s Cathedral and St. Stephen’s Square

• This cathedral’s square renaissance bell tower is an unforgettable sight in the evenings, when  its white stone illuminated by the last light of the day and you can see right through the structure’s narrow arches.
• If you head into the church you’ll be confronted by a treasure trove of renaissance art.
• There are works by Palma Junior, Stefano Celesti and a lesser-known Spanish painter Juan Boschettus. But the absolute must-see is Madonna and Child, a Venetian work from the 1220s by an unknown artist.
• Long and with an irregular shape, the square is the centre of Hvar’s social world, with cafes and restaurants that spill out onto the polished flagstones in summer.
• The square was once part of the bay, but some clever engineering helped to level out the land during the 18th century when it was also fully paved.

Spanjola Fortress

• Head up from Hvar Town’s main square, passing through the Porta di Datallo, you can ascend the steep stairway to this Venetian fortress from the 1500s. It’s in very good shape considering its age, with walls, towers and tunnels to check out.
• On the battlements you can look through the canon embrasures for an unbroken view of Hvar Town and the framed by the Adriatic and Pakleni islands.
• Inside the castle there are displays of historic artefacts, among which are ancient amphorae from an earlier Bronze Age stronghold on this spot.

You can go inside for free if it’s open. For seafront dining in Dubrovnik or Split, you’d pay a premium. In Primosten, it’s a way of life and you’ll enjoy the experience for a much more reasonable price.

Klapa is a traditional form of singing in the Dalmatia region of Croatia and is described as multi-part acapella singing.

This type of music has long been a part of cultural heritage, communication and identity and you’re more likely to experience an authentic klapa evening in a smaller town like Klapa in the taverns and konobas around the village.

To find these events, look on Facebook for upcoming events or ask at your accommodation if you’re staying in Primosten. Because the village is so small, these events are not widely promoted and you’re more likely to find an answer if you ask in a pub or restaurant or look out for adverts for Klapa performances while you’re exploring the town.

St Donatus Church built in year 800 This is a Sea Organ and is plays music from the waves underneath the large marble steps. Devised in 2005 As the sun goes down this circular installation, embedded in the ground, comes to life. The Greeting to the Sun uses photovoltaic cells to absorb the suns energy by day and then releases it in a vivid graphical display as it starts to get dark. Around the circle, 22 metres in diameter are carved the names of the saints to which Zadar’s churches are dedicated, with astronomical information detailing the ascension and declination on each saints’ day. You’ve heard about the city walls that the Venetians built to keep the Ottomans at bay, but none of that would have been much use without a clean water supply. The best time to check out this sight is at night, when the wells and defences are lit up from below.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is clearly the No 1 thing to do Great Waterfall. these are 5 min drive from our apartments -  B and B Villa Sumrak Plitvica Caves of Barac - 1/2 hr drive from  B and B Villa Sumrak Plitvica

Rastoke - stop and have a walk around - apparently very spectacular. It's on the way to the Plitvice Lakes (on the way from where - not sure yet)

1. For a boat trip from Hvar I would warmly recommend Island Discovery. As a skipper, I can tell you honestly there are many better caves arround Vis instead of Blue Cave which is crazy expensive and you spend 5min inside (swimming is not alowed there)
