Things to do
Geological wonders are abound in Mount Gambier, the heart of the Limestone Coast and second largest town in South Australia. Discover the dazzling sapphire waters of the famed Blue Lake, the local’s favourite Little Blue Lake and explore an underground garden of Eden at Umpherston Sinkhole.
Blue Lake
Its what the area is mostly known for. There is a tour that we went on that had signs up at the entrance to Blue Lake at the information centre (I think it was called). There is a story as why the tour operator does not operate out of their information centre but when you call and book the tour, you get to go inside the fence and down to the water level, well as close as you can. It was worth doing in my opinion.
Umpherston Sinkhole
There is an underground garden of Eden at Umpherston Sinkhole, its free and really worth visiting and spending some time finding out about its history. There are many stairs to take down and back up again, so consider your level of fitness for it. Really worth visiting.
Piccaninnie Ponds
For the adventurous, snorkel the crystal clear waters of the Piccaninnie Ponds which have been filtering through the limestone over thousands of years. You can also visit and view these ponds, not overly exciting but free and worth a look.
Kilsby Sinkhole
Sinkhole Gin
Kilsby Sinkhole is the only site of its kind that welcomes snorkellers, freedivers and open water certified scuba divers under the supervision of a licensed and industry qualified guide.
Kilsby Sinkhole is also home to Sinkhole Gin, produced from crystal clear limestone-filtered water and local native botanicals. It is 15 mins by car from Mount Gambier
Tantanoola Caves Conservation Park
Witness the breathtaking display of cave decorations and formations. A knowledgeable guide will introduce you to the history and geology of the caves and explain how this spectacular array of formations has developed over thousands of years. Its just 24 mins up the main road from Mount Gambier on the way to Millicent, or 17 mins from Millicent. More information at parks.sa.gov.au
