1. Riverside Walk

The first thing to do is to park in or around the main street (easy to find as you will drive straight into it as you enter town) and walk (or ride a bike) down the street towards the river.
Across the river you will see Christians Minde which is where Sussex was first settled – what a lovely building.
Once at the river front you will see a footpath going both left and right. Going left will take you further up the river past the Swordfish Brewery, Nielson Lane boat ramp, Sussex Inlet Pontoons – boat hire, accommodation places and more. Well worth it.
Going right you go past the RSL and the Dragon Boat clud – The River Dragons, if you are lucky they will be out paddling up the river – listen for the beat of the drum. Continue along to another boat ramp and eventually the beach (best take the car if going to the beach).
2. Explore by Water

Go by Kayak, Stand up Paddleboard, boat – whatever works for you.
What to see:
There 3 main Sussex Inlet waterway areas to explore:
- Rivermouth: Boat out (go right) to the river mouth (image on left) with a picnic, enjoy a swim and a fish. Going to the river mouth on a nice day is a must do activity. On the way, stop and slide down the sand dune.
- St Georges Basin: Go left, takes you up the river to St Georges Basin where you can go fishing and all open water, water sports. There are many other towns on the other side of the basin.
- The Quays: House watch along the Quays. Cruise through the canals and see the Gold Coast of the South Coast.
There are other waterways to explore as yo will see below in the places to surf, swim and Stand up paddleboard.
How to see:
- Launch your own boat at one of the many launching ramps to go fishing, water skiing, sightseeing, diving etc
- Hire a Pontoon boat – Take a larger group out on the Sussex Inlet Pontoons. Choose to skipper yourself or have one of their knowledgable skippers guide you.
- Hire a tinnie at: Sussex Inlet Marine Centre or Pelican Shores Cafe and Marina.
- Stand up Paddleboard – for something completely different hire a Stand up Paddleboard, they can even provide lessons
3. Shopping
There are plenty of shopping opportunities, we even have our own internationally acclaimed company right here is Sussex.
- Explore all the shops in our own shopping area in the main street.
- There are three op shops in town for the bargain and opportunity shoppers.
- Explore the many other shops from the supermarket, hardware, post office, sports store, Real Estate, two bakeries and much more.
- Ocean and Earth is an international company providing surf and fashion wear cloathing and equipment. Their head office and factory outlet is located at the entrance to Sussex Inlet and is a must visit.
4. Walking Tracks

Many options exist inlcuding:
- Walk along the river as described above as the best things to do in Sussex Inlet, known as the Chris Creek to Badgee Bridge walk
- Badgee Bridge to the Surf Club (approx 2-3 hours) – Same walk as above that is extended from the Chris Creek bridge through to the Surf Club.
- Continue up the hill onto Lyons Road, then continue to Sussex Road. Turn left towards the river.
- At the river there are a couple of good cafes, a good point for a stop.
- Continue along the river, through a small patch of mangroives and over a small boardwalk. You continue past the bowling club and get to Lions Park.
- Turn right at Lions Park into Edgewater Avenue and turn left into Alamein Road.
- At the end of Alamein Road is a caravan park with a public reserve on the rivers edge. Follow the track along the river.
- You emerge at Holiday Haven Cabins and reserve, follow the footpath up the hill to get to Pacificana Drive.
- Turn left on Pacificana Drive and this takes you to the surf club and surf beach.
- Cudmirrah to Swanhaven (off-leash dog friendly) (approx 1 hour return + time for a coffee at Cuddy Cafe)

5. Cycling
- Badgee Bridge to Chris Creek – as described above. It is a shared walkway and is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Extend at Chris Creek and follow the road (Government road and Pacificana Drive) to the beach. Its a great heart starter.

- Mountain Biking – There are numerous mountain bike tracks in the area, one local group is SCUM. Where to ride.

A number of surf spots to choose from:
- Taboo/Sussex Point – Located just before the Sussex Surf Club & Beach is a dirt track on the left that takes you to the far left of the main beach. This is for advanced surfers.
- Conneally’s Reef/Cudmirrah – Located at the end of Third Ave, Cudmirrah. Good for intermediate surfers.
- Berrara Beach – located at the end of Berrara Rd. This is good for intermediate and beginner surfers.
